I thought I'd share the story behind one of my newest commissions California Map Dot Rainbow Triptych. This was a piece I made especially for the lobby of the newly renovated Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. This artwork was commissioned by the team at ForrestPerkins, the interior design studio behind the hotel’s impressive redesign.
Installed in May 2024, the triptych is now a permanent part of the Sheraton’s welcome experience.
Process and materials
This piece is made up of three individual panels, each mounted with 459 wooden dots faced in vintage maps of California. The dots form ombred gradients of colour that carry across one artwork to the next from deep Pacific blues to desert ochres and coastal greens.
The use of maps is a nod to the journeys taken across the Golden State and the many personal stories that crisscross in a place like San Diego.
About the Commission
ForrestPerkins, known for their elevated and elegant approach to hospitality interiors, approached me to create a statement piece for the Sheraton’s newly transformed lobby. The vision was to integrate artwork that reflects both the local identity of San Diego and the international reach of the Sheraton brand - something contemporary, colourful and rich with meaning.
