Outlands is created from found imagery sourced from vintage atlases and travel books. Small illustrations of hills, mountains and distant landscapes are carefully selected for their colour, form and texture, then composed into a mathematically precise dot composition.
Many of the images date back up to seventy years and were produced using traditional lithographic printing methods. I am particularly drawn to the subtle tonal qualities of these older prints, often rendered in muted violets and greens that give the landscapes a dreamlike, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Each original plate is carefully removed from the book, hand-bonded onto birch plywood to create a tactile, painted surface, and then laser cut into 16mm dots. These individual fragments are reassembled into a structured geometric field, transforming dispersed landscapes into a unified whole.
