Original 3D mixed media collage artwork created from vintage maps sourced from antique atlases, sea charts and archival world map publications.
Each map fragment is carefully selected for its colour, texture and cartographic detail, then hand-bonded onto wood and laser cut into individual circular elements. The dots are arranged into a mathematically precise geometric composition, creating a structured field of colour that shifts from ocean blues, turquoise and pale aqua into soft lilacs, muted pinks, coral reds and warm land tones, before returning again to cooler sea-coloured fragments.
The work explores ideas of voyage, movement and connection. Fragments of coastlines, islands, borders and open water are brought together into a single ordered composition, reflecting the way places, people and histories overlap through travel, migration and shared experience.
The colour arrangement gives the piece a gentle sense of atmosphere and movement, with the cooler blues suggesting sea, distance and open space, while the warmer central tones create a quiet focal point within the grid.
Mounted on white gesso board, the piece balances the aged surface of vintage printed maps with repetition, rhythm and contemporary geometry. Every dot has a subtle three-dimensional quality, giving the artwork depth and movement as light changes across the surface.
